We spent Fourth of July and the day after in Boca Grande this year at GiGi and Papa's beach house! We started off the trip with a photo shoot on the beach for the girls, followed by having fun on the boat at the sandbar, and then going fishing at which tragedy struck! Bear was casting his fishing pole and accidentally caught Marlee on her face close to her eye but thank goodness not in her eye with his fishing hook. :( To be blunt...it was awful! We knew as soon as we got a look at her that we needed to get to the hospital! We made the twenty minute boat ride in to the house with poor Marlee screaming like crazy (poor girl was in so much pain and so scared...Bear and I were beside ourselves and freaking out and it was truly a blessing that we were with GiGi and Papa because they kept us all as calm as possible during this scary time). With GiGi being a nurse she truly went into nurse mode and knew exactly what was best each step of the way! As soon as we got back to the house we quickly got in the car and drove to the nearest hospital...Englewood Community Hospital where they took us right in and started the process of getting this hook out! It was a brand new hook that Bear had just put on his line so although it was a super sharp one, at least it wasn't an old rusty one because that would have opened a whole new can of worms! The hospital staff explained to Marlee what they would be doing and truly were wonderful with her. They put some really good medicine on a bandage and covered the area where the hook was and then had her lay in the bed for 30 minutes. This medicine numbed the area really good so that they could work on getting the hook out. They were very thankful that we had just left the hook in and not tried to cut it because they said that is the worst thing you can do. It took the Dr, three nurses, and me holding down Marlee to get the hook out but after about 15 min of working on it, they were able to push the hook through and then cut it. It was such a painful experience for Marlee even with the medicine but she was a brave girl and now has that hook in a plastic container as a souvenir and forgives her Daddy of course and knows it was an accident! We got back home to Papa and Karsyn waiting anxiously to see Marlee. It was about dark by this time, we had a quick dinner and watched the Boca Grande fireworks and did sparklers to celebrate America's birthday! Marlee slept good and the next morning seemed as if nothing had even happened. She is on an antibiotic for 10 days and is bruised a bit but that is it. We are so thankful that it all worked out for our girl! We spent Wednesday on the boat and at the sandbar before heading home!
Daddy caught the best catch of all! Marlee said later after the hook was out that she was the "fresh catch of the day'!
Brave, brave girl!
